Dries Mertens was really tempted to join Inter prior to opting to sign a contract extension with Napoli according to a report in today’s print edition of Italian daily newspaper Corriere dello Sport.

The Belgian national team’s deal with his current employers is set to expire at the end of the month and as a result Inter had shown a keen interest in bringing him to the club on a free transfer.

For a while it looked like Inter would pull it off and Mertens was tempted by the idea of a move elsewhere having spent a long time playing for Napoli but he changed his mind.

Mertens is still yet to put pen to paper on a contract extension with the Stadio San Paolo club but is widely expected to do so shortly.

This season the 33-year-old has scored 12 goals and tallied six assists in 29 appearances across all competitions to date.
