Former Roma and AC Milan coach Fabio Capello discussed Inter’s recent form, coach Antonio Conte, Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen and the Nerazzurri’s future in an interview in today’s paper edition of the Rome based newspaper Corriere dello Sport.
First, he discussed what Inter have been missing this season.
“The coach needed some time to understand where he ended up and get to know the other teams. But the money they have spent is a lot. Frankly, I thought they would have broken Juventus’ cycle this season already.”
The 74-year-old Italian highlighted how the Milanese club were essentially out of the title race until Juventus and Lazio began dropping points.
“Up until a few games ago, before Lazio and Juve started to drop points, Inter were almost out of the title race. Now they’re back in the running for the Scudetto. We’re tied to the short-term results. But with games every three days you don’t have time to think of the facts that contradict you.”
The former England and Juventus coach wasn’t worried about former Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen’s slow adaption to Italian football and coach Antonio Conte’s tactical system.
“Platini took six months to make it in Italy. It depends on a lot of things. Also, it’s different to play behind the strikers in Italy, in the middle of the action, whereas abroad, they give you more space. Let’s listen to the coaches, who are the only ones who see the players every day.”
Finally, Capello spoke about whether Inter will succeed or not in the future.
“I think so. They’re the club closest to Juve, in terms of financial resources. I repeat, I thought they would have already succeeded this year.”
Inter are currently third in the league table after 33 games, sitting six points behind rivals and league leaders Juventus. A win over Roma tonight is imperative if the Nerazzurri are to put the pressure on the Bianconeri, who face fourth place Lazio tomorrow evening.
