Inter striker Romelu Lukaku has shared his belief that Inter are in with a chance of winning the Europa League off the back of their 2-0 win over Getafe in the last on Wednesday night at the Arena Auf’Schalke.
Lukaku scored Inter’s first goal of the match around the half hour mark in the game whilst Christian Eriksen scored Inter’s second of the game a short while before the full time whistle.
“It was a difficult match, but mission accomplished. This is an important competition for us, because we know we have a shot at winning this trophy,” he explained in an interview with Belgian multimedia broadcaster Vrt-Sporza which was posted on their website.
Speaking on his goal he said: “I learned that in Italy you don’t get many chances and you have to focus on that one chance.”
The 27-year-old was then asked about last night’s opponents and whether he and teammates were taken aback by how the Spaniard’s started the game.
“This match was a first test against a tough and aggressive opponent, but we did well. We were not really surprised by their bright start, because with our manager we are prepared for any situation. We had the match under control and used the space. 2-0 is a fair result.”
He was then asked whether or not Inter are the favourites to go all the way and win the Europa League for what would be the fourth time in Inter’s history.
“No, I don’t think so. Many teams are worthy of winning this trophy but we have to look at ourselves and be hungry every day. Every game is a final. Hopefully we make the best of it.”
Lukaku joined Inter ahead of this season in a club record €65 million transfer deal from Premier League side Manchester United and he has had a stellar first season representing the Nerazzurri side.
In 48 appearances across all competitions to date, the 27-year-old has scored 30 goals and provided a total of five assists for his teammates.
