Inter central defender Diego Godin has admitted that despite initially struggling at Inter, things have now changed for the better for him following Inter’s 2-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the quarter finals of the Europa League on Monday night.
“At the beginning it was not easy for me, I changed a lot and I had to take some time to understand what the coach wanted but the team is also playing very well, we are doing very well,” he explained to the gathered media in a press conference post-match at the Merkur Spiel-Arena in Dusseldorf, Germany.
“We know when we have to defend, we are doing an excellent job defensively and from this we all come out stronger. Individually, the performance is always there when the team does the job the coach asks. We were all very good tonight, we understood everything.”
He was then asked how important it is for Inter to have experienced heads such as Ashley Young and himself playing.
“If we don’t do what the coach asks, we don’t get anything. Experience is needed to understand how we are doing things.”
In conclusion he shared his delight at Inter managing to make it to the Europa League semi finals, ten years on from Inter winning the Champions League as part of their historic treble winning season.
“I’m happy because after 10 years we are in a European semi final, now let’s enjoy this result.”
This season the veteran Uruguayan national team defender has made 34 appearances across all competitions to date. In the match against Bayer Leverkusen, the former Atletico Madrid player was unable to add to his tally of one goal and one assist.
