Inter central defender Diego Godin has shared his belief that he and his teammates were deserving 2-1 winners over Bayer Leverkusen in the quarter finals of the Europa League on Monday night.
“I think we deserved to win. We had to suffer a bit but they didn’t create too many opportunities,” he explained in an interview with Inter’s official club broadcaster Inter TV following the match.
“We had the game in our control and we did a lot of good things, creating a lot of chances to finish the game. We won, that’s what’s important.”
The former Atletico Madrid defender then went on to share his delight at qualifying for the Europa League semi finals and stressed that he and his teammates must enjoy the moments.
“We’re in a European semi final for the first time in ten years and we’re really happy about that. We’ll see who it’s against, but before we will rest and recover a little bit.
“We’ll enjoy this moment, which is so important for us, the staff, the fans and all the Club.”
Godin proceeded to speak on where he feels that he and his teammates can improve as a team but admitted that the team ultimately played well at the Merkur Spiel-Arena.
“If football were mathematics it would be easier, but that’s the way it is. Of course, we can improve in knowing when to press and when to cover but today we had an excellent game. We never gave up and knew that Leverkusen like to have a lot of possession but they didn’t have many chances.”
In conclusion the experienced Uruguayan national team player spoke on how it has been for him to adapt to playing in a back three opposed to a back four.
“It’s not been easy for me to, after 20 years, come here and change the way I have played and adjust to what the coach demands.
“I’m playing in a totally different way now. I’ve trained hard and feel good physically. I made myself available, while respecting my teammates.
“Today I feel good, I help the team with the experience I have I in certain situations. There is only one important thing, and that’s that Inter win.”
This season Godin has made 34 appearances across all competitions to date, in which he has scored one goal and provided one assist.
