Ahead of Inter’s Europa League semi final with Shakhtar Donetsk, Inter centre back Stefan de Vrij has briefly reflected on the match which got them there, the 2-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen.
Inter rushed to a 2-0 lead in the match at the Merkur-Spiel Arena, which will also be the venue of their Europa League semi final, thanks to goals from Nicolo Barella and Romelu Lukaku.
Kai Havertz pulled one back for Bayer Leverkusen on the 25th minute in one of few moments where the German club caused problems for Inter on the night.
“Obviously we knew it was a one-off match, we had to win and we did it. We are happy with the result,” de Vrij remarked in an interview with European football’s governing body UEFA, which was shared on their Italian Twitter feed.
This season the Dutch national team player has made 44 appearances across all competitions to date, in which he has scored four goals, provided as many assists and helped the Nerazzurri keep a number of clean sheets. He was also recognised as the best defender in Serie A for the 2019/20 season.
