Cagliari CEO Mario Passetti confirmed the Rossoblu’s interest in Inter defender Diego Godin in an interview with Italian broadcaster Sky Sports Italia earlier today.
“We’re in talks for Godin, we cannot deny it. We are happy that the player has shown a lot of interest in Cagliari.”
Passetti then touched on the difficulties of the deal, but still remained hopeful.
“Negotiations are very difficult, let’s not have too many illusions. We are trying to understand if the deal can be carried out, but there are some complexities.”
The 34-year-old Godin, who is contracted to the Nerazzurri until 2022, is no longer wanted by coach Antonio Conte, who was not convinced of the player’s ability to play in a three-man defense.
The former Atletico Madrid man seemed shaky in the back-three despite consistent playing time under Conte, disappointing the 51-year-old Italian.
Godin made 36 appearances across all competitions last season for the Nerazzurri, for a total of 2800 minutes. In that time, he scored two goals, provided one assist and helped the side keep 13 clean sheets.
Considering his fairly high wage bill, the Nerazzurri are happy to lose the Uruguayan veteran this transfer window, with interest previously coming from both France and England.
