Cagliari coach Eusebio Di Francesco discussed the Rossoblu’s interest in Inter defender Diego Godin after the Sardinian club’s friendly match against Roma yesterday, which finished 2-2 with his words were noted by Italian media outlet FcInterNews.
“I think we need at least three players, in defense, midfield and up front. We are working in this direction, having an incomplete roster certainly does not help, but Covid-19 has changed a lot in the market balance.”
The former Roma coach then highlighted that the club is interested in a particular defender. The 34-year-old Uruguayan veteran, who seems destined to leave the Milanese side this transfer window.
“Beyond the goals conceded, because maybe we could score some more, the defense’s performance is linked to the work done. When you try to play from the back there’s more risk, but we are working on talks for a central defender.”
The 34-year-old Godin, who is contracted to the Nerazzurri until 2022, joined the Milanese club on a free transfer last summer, after his contract expired with Atletico Madrid.
The player struggled to adapt to coach Antonio Conte’s tactical system this season, in part due to his lack of experience in a three-man defense.
The veteran often found himself being benched in favour of 21-year-old Italian defender Alessandro Bastoni.
Godin made 36 appearances across all competitions last season for the Nerazzurri, for a total of 2800 minutes. In that time, he scored two goals, provided one assist and helped the side keep 13 clean sheets.
