A report from today’s paper edition of the Milano based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport analysed the contentious decisions in Inter’s thrilling 4-3 win over Fiorentina yesterday.
The report begins by discussing the penalty incident in the 18th minute. Argentine striker Lautaro Martinez goes down in the area after apparent contact with Viola defender Martin Caceres, which is quickly given as a penalty.
After a VAR check, referee Gianpaolo Calvarese overturned his decision and called for a goal kick instead. The contact does not justify a yellow card nor a penalty, and so it is a correct decision.
The rest of the match was very direct and well managed by Calvarese, with good calls and knowledge of when to book players.
Inter went down early in the game but a curling effort from Lautaro Martinez brought the game level just before half time. In the second half the Milanese club’s strong substitutions helped overturn the deficit and see the game end 4-3.
