Legendary Inter striker Roberto Boninsegna has shared his hopes that his former employers can go on and win the Serie A title for the first time in over a decade this season.
Inter last won the Serie A title in the 2009/10 season as part of their historic treble and have made an unbeaten start to this campaign with them having won two and drawn the other of their opening three fixtures of the 2020/21 season.
“Will Inter win the Serie A title this season? I hope so, I’ve been an Inter fan since birth. I see that the owners are making huge efforts, they spend a lot to get the players,” he explained to Italian news outlet TuttoMercatoWeb on the sidelines of the ‘Festival dello Sport’ event today.
“It seems to me that there are even too many of them and that someone can get confused. The duel with Juve remains, I believe that the others cannot be inserted in the title race because they are inferior to both Inter and Juve.”
Next he was asked if Inter can be considered as being superior to Juventus in terms of experienced players.
“There are experienced players, but they are also of a certain age. Experienced players are fine, but not all. Inter have signed some excellent players, now we need to see how they will perform. Sometimes the older ones, like Ibra, have injuries because it’s a long and intense season. I hope Inter win.”
He was then asked if he feels that any of Inter’s departments are lacking despite the signings that Inter made in the transfer window.
“I think the midfield. Yes, there is Vidal, but he is 33-years-old. There are also Sensi and Barella, but the department seems a bit too light to me. Maybe we need a replacement for Lukaku in the attack, if he’s missing we don’t have a real and serious striker.”
In conclusion he was asked about the upcoming Derby della Madonnina between Inter and AC Milan which will be held on Saturday October 17 at San Siro, with kick off scheduled for 6pm local time.
“To judge Milan, as well as any team, you have to wait six or seven games. The derby is the most heartfelt and fascinating match.
“Sometimes the least favourite team to win has won. I don’t know how this one will go as it’s a difficult match because it’s the most important in the league, but we must also see the absences. Logically, I hope Ibrahimovic is well, but on Saturday I hope he won’t be there.”
