Cagliari president Tommaso Giulini has claimed that he is happy that they never managed to bring Radja Nainggolan back to the club due to the money it would have cost them to do so.
Nainggolan spent the duration of last season on loan at Cagliari and Cagliari made an attempt to bring him back to the club on a permanent basis but were ultimately unable to agree terms with Inter for the Belgian, who they reportedly agreed personal terms with.
“From a fan’s point of view, I have a huge regret. At one point last year, with Radja we had shown that we were a great team with him on the pitch,” he explained in an interview which appeared in today’s print edition of Tuttosport.
“From a business point of view, however, given the economic problems in football, as president I say that in the end I am happy that the negotiation did not go through, given the costs.”
Giulini proceeded to apologise to new recruit Diego Godin, whose arrival he felt was overshadowed by the persistent media speculation regarding the possible return of Nainggolan.
“I’m sorry that this last minute negotiation that took place in the last few days of the window overshadowed the person I consider one of the most important signings in the history of Cagliari, Diego Godin.
“Godin is a great quality player, with clear leadership and a lot of experience and success behind him.”
Giulini also spoke on the futures of Alessio Cragno and Joao Pedro with the Rossoblu club.
Cragno is a player to have been linked with Inter on more than occasion and Giulini has admitted that he could leave the club if an excellent offer arrives.
“I am very fond of both and they are indisputably two absolute starters. The affection I feel for them makes me say that it would be nice to get to do something important together.
“If an excellent offer arrives for one of the two one day, it is clear that we would not mind pleasing the player.”
