Legendary former Inter midfielder Luis Suarez has once again chosen to hit out at Inter’s club owners, in an interview with Spanish news outlet AS.
The Spaniard, who was a fundamental part of the Grande Inter side of the 1960s, has often been critical of the Chinese e-commerce giants since their purchase of Inter in 2016 and he has criticised them once again.
“In this Chinese Inter I don’t know anyone, except the employees who have been there for many years,” he began.
“I don’t know if anyone is forgetting that not only did I play for Inter for nine years and I won two European Cups, but then I worked for more than 15 years with Massimo, the son of Angelo Moratti who hired me as a player. These gentlemen bought the club not to make them great again, but to do business.
“They are not interested in anything else. They even changed the name of Pinetina and now they call it Suning and Moratti’s name is barely visible. Those who were there before the Chinese have already done business and wanted the same things. They don’t have a football culture, they don’t know football, just money.”
He then went on to discuss his lack of attendance at San Siro these days.
“Do I go to San Siro? Almost never, between the fact that I am a commentator in Spain and the times coincide.
“I don’t have a pass, nor do all my former teammates but if I want to go one day, I can call the phone and ask for a ticket. I guess they would give it to me. I already know who to call. It is another Inter, not the “grande Inter” as ours was called.
“Inter are my team and with Conte this year I see them being a little better. The same thing can be done in the league because even if we start poorly, Juve are not as strong as in other years, I think.”
In conclusion the former Balon d’Or winner spoke on where Inter are dangerous and where they can improve as a team.
“Lukaku and Lautaro score with great ease but Inter lack a leader in midfield. They need someone who commands the game.
“They wanted to buy Kante but Kante is a ball retriever. Do you understand what I mean? He won a World Cup but by doing that role there, he recovers the ball. They didn’t buy him because Chelsea didn’t want to sell him.
“For this reason, let Eriksen play. The Dane is an excellent player even if it seems to me that the boy lacks a bit of character but certainly with 15 or 20 minutes per game he can do nothing. He must play consecutive games.”
Suarez joined Inter in the Summer of 1961 from Barcelona and spent the next nine years with the club before moving on to Sampdoria where he would spend three years before retiring. The now 85-year-old made 329 appearances across all competitions for the club, in which he scored 55 goals.
