A report from today’s paper edition of the Milano based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport has analysed the contentious decisions in the derby between Inter and AC Milan yesterday.

The report details how the penalty for the Rossoneri in the first half was correctly called by referee Maurizio Mariani.

A mistake was made in the 36th minute when the already booked Simon Kjaer held Lautaro Martinez on the edge of the box, which should have been a foul.

Theo Hernandez’s challenge on Romelu Lukaku a minute later should have also been a foul, the report continues, again a mistake by Mariani.

The biggest missed call made by the Italian referee was in the 56th minute, when the already booked Franck Kessie flew in with a strong challenge on Achraf Hakimi’s ankle, which could have been either a second yellow card or a direct red card.

Mariani did not even whistle for a foul, showing the gravity of the misstep.
