Italian journalist Matteo Marani discussed Inter’s start to the season and coach Antonio Conte when speaking with Italian broadcaster Sky Sports Italia ahead of the Nerazzurri’s clash against Genoa today.
“On this Saturday I expect Inter’s response, which today takes the whole scene. The Nerazzurri have collected less points than they’ve deserved with this start, just look at the stats of ball possession and balls played in the opponent’s area.”
Marani suggested that the 51-year-old Italian coach’s mentality may have changed after the meeting with Inter’s management at the end of last season.
“That said, somethings are still missing, such as the balance of the squad. Beyond the known absences, I think that after the meeting with the management, Conte changed his mind about the game, so much so that now he wants to build a more international team.”
Finally, the Italian journalist highlighted that the Nerazzurri need to win something this season under Conte to make his appointment worth it.
“I don’t know if the loss against Sevilla made him change his mind. In any case, I do not agree with him on one thing.
“It does not take four years to win, he did not come to Milan for that. At that point it would have been convenient to continue with Spalletti. This year he has to play to win.”
Inter are currently sixth in the Serie A table after four games, disappointing after a strong initial start. The Nerazzurri won their first two games against Fiorentina and Benevento, but stumbled against a gritty Lazio, forcing them to drop points in a 1-1 draw.
Conte’s side then lost their next game after the international break, the ever-important Milan derby against AC Milan.
The Champions League opener against Borussia Monchengladbach also left a little to be desired, with the Nerazzurri only achieving a 2-2 draw.
