Legendary former AC Milan defender Alessandro Costacurta has shared his belief that Inter can still make it to the last 16 of this years edition of the Champions League despite their less than ideal start in the competition.
Inter started the group stage with consecutive draws versus Borussia Monchengladbach and Shakhtar Donetsk and followed them up with a 3-2 loss away to 13 time Champions League winners Real Madrid earlier on this week.
Antonio Conte’s Inter are currently stuck at the bottom of group B with just two points to their name from their opening three matches with three games, and nine points, still to play for over the course of the coming weeks.
“Hakimi already had the idea of passing it back and Mendy, in my view, unbalanced the Nerazzurri wing-back and committed a foul. His hands are clearly used to push Hakimi’s body as he passes, which result in this mistake,”Costacurta explained whilst present in the studios of Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, yesterday afternoon.
“There wasn’t much that could have been done about Ramos’ goal. He is a top player even in attack, especially at corner kicks. For sure though he could have been hindered more, Casemiro’s block on de Vrij was decisive and helped Ramos.”
The now 54-year-old, who spent 21 years with Inter’s city rivals AC Milan between 1986 and 2007, then shared his thoughts on the Inter team as a whole.
“Can Inter get to the next round? I still think it is possible, the group is paradoxical and everything is possible. This is an intermittent team, they don’t have the continuity necessary to bring home the result. Certain players and certainties need to be recovered. Hakimi will no longer make such a mistake, I’m sure.”
