Inter Miami striker Gonzalo Higuain has wished Inter striker Lautaro Martinez well after taking on the number nine shirt for the Argentine national team.
“The number nine shirt weighs the most on your back because behind you there is a country, their happiness depends on you, I have a clear conscience, I wish Lautaro the best,” he explained in an interview with Argentine broadcaster TyC Sports, which was broadcast yesterday evening.
Higuain, who recently joined David Beckham’s MLS side from Inter’s arch rivals Juventus, proceeded to sing the praises of Lautaro and spoke on the high potential that he has as a player.
“I see a lot of potential in him, he is very young and is a starter at Inter, which is not easy at his age. Playing the World Cup qualifiers is very complicated, as is the World Cup where you have to feel good for a month.
“Lautaro has great skills, I hope he can give great joy to the national team. It is difficult to judge a player at his age, he has a long career ahead. I would like to evaluate him when his trajectory ends and after seeing if he will remain at such a high level for so many years.”
Lautaro joined Inter in the Summer of 2018 from Superliga Argentina side Racing Club. He is now into his third year at Inter and his second as a regular starter.
Since his arrival at the club he has went from strength to strength and all in all he has made 93 appearances across all competitions to date for Inter, in which he has scored 34 goals and tallied 10 assists for his teammates. This season the highly rated 23-year-old has four goals and two assists in nine appearances.
