Torino’s Salvatore Sirigu: “Inter’s Alessandro Bastoni Is Good Enough To Start For Italy”

Salvatore Sirigu has sang the praises of Inter central defender Alessandro Bastoni after he made his debut for the Italian national team on Wednesday evening versus Estonian.

Bastoni was promoted from the Italian under 21 national team to the senior team following a series of injuries to players initially called up and was thrust into the starting line-up to take on Estonia at Fiorentina’s Stadio Artemio Franchi.

Italian media were unanimous in their praise of Bastoni in Wednesday’s papers and Torino goalkeeper Sirigu was left equally as impressed with what he seen from the highly rated young defender, who is one of the most promising Italian players out there at the moment.

“There are many players who can fight for a shirt in the starting lineup because luckily we have many guys who are doing well at their clubs,” Sirigu explained in an interview with Italian broadcaster Rai Sport.

“Bastoni is one of those players because he is a player who is measuring himself immediately at high levels and I think that is fundamental for the growth of a professional.”

Bastoni joined Inter in the Summer of 2017 and had his breakthrough at the club last season. This term the 21-year-old, who is contracted to Inter until 2023, has made seven appearances, in which he has tallied a single assist.
