In an interview with Inter’s official matchday programme ahead of this weekend’s match at home to Torino, Inter defender Matteo Darmian has spoken on a range of different topics and started by speaking on what joining big clubs means to him.

“For me it is not a point of arrival to join big clubs like Inter or Manchester United. It is a starting point, a new beginning and that moment when you say ‘I must not give up because the beautiful and difficult comes now’,” he explained.

Darmian then spoke on his transformation from midfielder to defender and what the best thing about being a defender is: “I started playing as a midfielder, then I moved back and whilst scoring can bring the greatest joy for an attack, saving a goal is the best thing that you can do as a defender.”

The former Torino player then spoke on the toughest opponent that he has had to mark during his career so far: “I have been lucky enough to play with great champions in my career and to mark others. Eden Hazard is certainly among the most difficult.”

In conclusion the 36 time Italian national team representative shared his five a side team made up of players from Inter’s history.

“Toldo, who was a goalkeeper with heart. Facchetti, who was elegant and a legend. Mazzola, a champion of the Grande Inter side. Baggio, a talent that everyone agrees on. Vieri, who had pure power.”

Darmian joined Inter in the most recent Summer transfer window in a loan with obligation to buy deal from fellow Serie A side Parma. Since his arrival, the 30-year-old has made five appearances across all competitions but he has been unable to make any goal contributions.
