Inter manager Antonio Conte has stressed the importance of tomorrow evening’s Champions League group stage match-up at home to Real Madrid and admitted that the match is a final for him and his team given their poor start to the group stage campaign.

“For us this match represents a final because after the defeat in the first leg and the two previous draws we do not have many ways out,” he began his pre-match press conference which was held a short time ago.

“We know that a difficult match awaits us against a team that we know has a recent past in the competition. There is an important result to be achieved, but we also know that if we want to do it, we can. We showed it in the first leg, maybe we have to improve in some situations.”

Next he was asked why Inter have been unable to make the leap in quality that they were expected to and whether or not some signings were needed.

“We must make the leap in quality because a lot is expected of us. At the same time we have not done it. Talk counts for nothing but the facts count.

“We must all take on our responsibilities. Me, the club and the players. If it has not yet happened it does not mean that it will not happen.”

The former Juventus and Italian national team boss was then asked why there appears to be a fear in his players to shoot early on in games.

“Last year we often started the games with the right attitude. This year many teams arrive very buttoned up and closed. Often and willingly it becomes more difficult to find the goal. We need more patience.

“We have a lot more minutes of the ball. At the same time we are conceding too much, but as I said before, if we want to be competitive we have to raise everything, starting with our attention to competitive nastiness.”

Conte was then asked whether the absences from the Real Madrid team will change his mind about who will take initiative in the match.

“I don’t think Real can cry from this point of view. They have a complete squad, with lots of good players. The fact that the press talks about the absences makes me smile a little.”

The 51-year-old, who is now into his second year as manager of Inter, was then questioned about whether all of the criticism directed at Inter lately is something that bothers him.

“This is a fact, regardless of whether we try to make everything negative, but we knew it. We noticed it last year. For me it was the first year, from this point of view I was mentally very prepared.

“Maybe someone else may not be among the players, but when you play in important teams, with badge, you need to know that either everything is good or everything is bad. There is no middle ground.

“This must give us even more strength and we must understand that the only way to avoid speculation, criticism, chatter and nonsense, is to respond on the pitch.

“We have to do it if we want to stay at Inter, otherwise we go to mid-table and teams lower down and live in peace.”

Conte was then asked about the chances of Alexis Sanchez starting alongside Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku after their success on the field all together in Sunday’s 4-2 win over Torino.

“It could be a solution used more during a game or if we are playing against lower level teams than Inter. We are already a fairly attacking team.

“We have midfielders with much more attacking than defensive characteristics. It would be very difficult to bear three forwards.

“At the same time, during the match you can create situations to risk something more while still maintaining a balance with two more substantial midfielders.”
