In an interview with European football’s governing body UEFA, Inter central midfielder Nicolo Barella has discussed the role that he plays out on the field, mezzala.

“The mezzala acts as a link between the attack and the defence. The mezzala must be good in both phases to lend a hand to both the attack and the defence,” the Italian national team player explained.

The former Cagliari player, who is now into his second season as an Inter player, then went on to speak about what it is like to play under current Inter manager Antonio Conte and what he has done for him in his time with Inter so far.

“He has helped me a lot, I think I have grown more in terms of managing matches. Now I know better when to go to the penalty box, when to wait and when to make the decisive play. In this regard he helped me a lot.”

Since arriving at Inter in the Summer of 2019, Barella has grown exponentially and has cemented himself as one of the best Italian midfielders and one of the best young midfielders around at the moment.

The 23-year-old, who is under contract with Inter until 2024, has made 52 appearances for Inter, in which he has scored four goals and provided 12 assists for his teammates.

This term the 18-time Italian national team representative has four assists in 11 appearances across all competitions to date.
