Former Inter president and owner Massimo Moratti has today shared his belief that Inter could beat Real Madrid in tonight’s UEFA Champions League group stage encounter at San Siro.

“These are games that make history in themselves, but it could be the right occasion for Inter to beat Real Madrid,” he explained in an interview with Italian daily newspaper Leggo, which appeared in today’s print edition.

“Real have some absences, but above all Inter come into this match having won over Torino in a special way, with great character.”

Moratti then went on to reflect on Inter’s win which seen them come from 2-0 down at the hour mark and win 4-2 come the full time whistle at San Siro on Sunday afternoon.

“The first half and the first 10 minutes of the second half were disappointing. Then came the quality especially of the forwards. Skriniar’s introduction to the game was also important, he reassured the defence.”

Moratti was then asked about what he made of Inter manager Antonio Conte and Inter striker Romelu Lukaku’s comments following the match, in which they both said that this Inter side are not a great team.

“Fair statements from a coach who wants much more and from a player who says that you can’t make a terrible effort to recover after forgetting to play in the first half. They were intelligent words to encourage the team to do better.”

Next Moratti, who was Inter’s owner for just shy of 20 years between the mid 1990s and early 2010s, spoke on Christian Eriksen’s future with Inter.

“He has great qualities, but he either failed to fit in, or they couldn’t fit him in. If the situation remains like this in the next month, they could go down separate paths, as Marotta himself implied.”

Moratti then went on to discuss Serie A leaders AC Milan, who have a lot to thank Zlatan Ibrahimovic for.

“AC Milan deserve first place and can aspire to win the Scudetto. Ibra is an exceptional man and player, the Rossoneri must hope that he is out for a short time. However the whole team has so far overcome important obstacles with unexpected continuity and maturity.”

In conclusion he spoke on Inter’s arch rivals and shared his belief that they remain the favourites to win the league.

“I think they remain the favourite due to the quality of the entire squad. It seems to me that Pirlo is adapting more and more to his role. Juve will continue to grow and will still be the hardest to fight for those who want to win the league.”
