Anthony Taylor heavily influenced last night’s UEFA Champions League group stage match between Inter and Real Madrid at San Siro according to a report in today’s print edition of Italian daily newspaper Corriere dello Sport.
The Rome based news outlet have been highly critical of the English referee and have given his performance in the match a rating of just 4.5/10.
Taylor handed Real Madrid a penalty within the first few months and in the eyes of Inter manager Antonio Conte he killed the game when he decided to send off Arturo Vidal just after the midway point of the first half.
Vidal talked himself into being sent off as he received two yellow cards within a few seconds of one another due to being so adamant that Taylor should have awarded Inter a penalty when he went to ground.
The report explains that just as Vidal was about to kick the ball, Raphael Varane got a toe to the ball. It was not a clear incident and it is not known whether VAR would have chopped it off had it been awarded due to it being very borderline.
At the start of the second half Taylor failed to award Inter another penalty when Lucas Vazquez fouled Roberto Gagliardini. Taylor had already awarded a penalty for a similar situation in one of his other refereeing assignments this season but on this occasion he did not but he should have.
