Legendary Inter striker Roberto Boninsegna has shared his belief that Inter have what it takes to be able to get the better of Borussia Monchengladbach in tonight’s UEFA Champions League group stage encounter.
Inter head into this match needing to win in order to have any chance of making it into the next round of the competition and come in to it off the back of a confidence boosting 3-0 win over Sassuolo at the weekend.
“Inter are equipped to win and even if Borussia are stronger than Sassuolo, they must play the same way that they played on Saturday,” he explained in an interview with Italian daily newspaper La Repubblica, which appeared in today’s print edition.
“They must have fun and entertain, I say this as an Inter fan. Unfortunately, when your fate depends on others, it rarely turns out well.”
Boninsegna then went on to express his thoughts on Inter central midfielder Arturo Vidal’s sending off in Inter’s last Champions League group stage game versus Real Madrid which left the Nerazzurri playing with 10 men for about an hour.
“It can happen. I never threw myself on the ground, but when I thought it was a penalty I got mad.”
In conclusion Boninsegna recalled the infamous match between Inter and Borussia Monchengladbach from back in 1971 during which he was hit in the head with a can which was thrown by a Borussia Monchengladbach supporter.
“The Germans accused me of pretending to get the can on my head. It’s ridiculous! The referee, a Frenchman, also saw the bump on the back of my neck. I wasn’t lying. Referring to me, he said to one of his assistants: He is not a liar.”
