Legendary Inter central midfielder has shared his belief that Inter were deserved winners in their penultimate UEFA Champions League group stage match away to Borussia Monchengladbach.
Matteo Darmian gave Inter the lead early on in the match in Germany and a brace from Romelu Lukaku helped Antonio Conte’s side to a huge 3-2 win, a result which gives them a shot at qualification for the knockout stages of the competition in next week’s group stage finale with Shakhtar Donetsk.
“Inter started very well and deserved the win,” Cambiasso, who spent a decade with the club between 2004 and 2014, explained whilst present in the studios of Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia following the match.
“They didn’t do well when trying to double their lead. Lukaku made a difference in an amazing way. In one on one situations it is impossible to mark him. Conceding just before half time can kill you but the coach’s reaction make it clear that the team is there.”
Cambiasso then spoke on the importance of Real Madrid in Inter’s chances of making it to the next round.
“Real Madrid will not accept finishing second, they will play to win. Inter are coming from behind in the group and we can be optimistic.
“I think that the way things are, with a win Inter will qualify. There will be no playing for the draw in Madrid, Inter have everything in their hands.”
He then went on to further sing the praises of Lukaku, who continues to be a talisman for Inter, by adding: “Lukaku is not the same as the others, he is a leader. Whether he wants to say it or not, but he is a leader.”
During his spell with Inter, Cambiasso made a grand total of 431 appearances across all competitions, during which he scored 51 goals and provided 34 assists for his Nerazzurri teammates.
