Borussia Monchengladbach central midfielder Christoph Kramer has shared his belief that Breel Embolo was not offside and that their third goal against Inter in last night’s penultimate UEFA Champions League group stage encounter between the two sides.
“We did well after a difficult opening 15 minutes. We had long periods of possession, broke Inter down and deservedly made it 1-1,” he explained in an interview with Borussia Monchengladbach’s official club website following the match.
Kramer, who has been with Die Fohlen since the Summer of 2016, went on to add: “Thuram lost the ball during a period in which we were in control and they punished us. They sat very deep during the final quarter of an hour, but we still fought hard and made it 3-3.”
The scoreline however did not sit at 3-3 for very long as referee Danny Makkelie chopped it off upon reviewing the action on the VAR monitored and judged Breel Embolo to be offside. Kramer went on to dispute Makkelie’s decision.
“I don’t think Embolo was in the goalkeeper’s eye line. With my Gladbach bias, it wasn’t offside, but it’s a tough situation. The goal didn’t count in the end and that happens and it ultimately meant that we lost out.”
Following the result and Shakhtar Donetsk’s victory over Real Madrid in the other group stage match, things in group B are wide open with all four clubs still able to secure a place in the next round of the competition in next week’s group stage finale.
