Inter’s bid to sign Atalanta outcast Papu Gomez in January has received the approval of former AC Milan midfielder Walter Novellino.

Gomez has fallen out with head coach Gian Piero Gasperini in Bergamo and is widely expected to leave the club this month, with the Nerazzurri thought to be favourites for his signature.

Antonio Conte is looking for reinforcements up front in order to ease the burden on Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez.

Speaking to TuttoMercatoWeb, Novellino said: “I think Gomez would do well at Inter.

“He knows how to play between the lines, he can cut inside to shoot and he plays with confidence.

“Conte’s teams play fast and direct football like Barcelona, Manchester City and Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds; it’s OK to keep possession but you need to get the ball forward and make the most of Romelu Lukaku.”

Inter are one point behind league leaders AC Milan as Serie A prepares to resume on Sunday with a full round of fixtures.

The Nerazzurri will be looking for an eighth consecutive win when they host Crotone at San Siro and Novellino is convinced they can fight for the Scudetto until the end of the season.

He added: “Inter seem like the most complete team in the league to me, even though Milan play great football with their 4-2-3-1 system and remind me of our side that won the Scudetto against the odds in 1979.”

Conte’s side will follow up the match against Crotone with trips to play Sampdoria and Roma before they face Juventus on 17 January.
