Former Inter midfielder Matias Almeyda believes Juventus are still favourites to win the Serie A title.

The Bianconeri are 10 points behind league leaders AC Milan and nine behind Inter in second, having lost ground before Christmas with a surprise 3-0 defeat at home to Fiorentina.

Inter have been tipped by many to win the league following their elimination from the Champions League but Almeyda, currently in charge of San Jose Earthquakes in the United States, had a different view.

Speaking to FcInterNews.it, the Argentine said: “I see Juventus as the favourites, I don’t know if Milan can keep up this level until the end of the season.

“But the fact that Inter can certainly compete, after Lazio fought for the title last season, tells you Serie A is becoming more exciting.

“Italian football is improving again; it’s not quite at the level of the glory days in the 1990s, but finally the league is competitive again.”

Almeyda spent two seasons with the Nerazzurri between 2002 and 2004, scoring once in 47 appearances in all competitions.

He arrived in the summer that followed Inter’s dramatic final-day collapse when they threw away the league title with a 4-2 defeat against Lazio.

Almeyda joked: “If I’d been at Inter for that match we would definitely have won. They didn’t have enough grit and determination…

“Inter was and remains a global institution, they were and will always have to be aiming to win things.

“It’s a shame we never won anything while I was at the club.”

Antonio Conte’s side arrive in the New Year off the back of seven consecutive league wins and will look to extend their Serie A streak at home to Crotone on Sunday.

Trips to Sampdoria and Roma follow next week before Inter host Juventus at San Siro on 17 January.
