Alessandro Bastoni promised Inter’s season would not be derailed by the Nerazzurri’s surprise defeat at Sampdoria.
Claudio Ranieri’s side went into the half-time interval at Marassi two goals up following a penalty from Antonio Candreva and a goal from another ex-Inter player Keita Balde.
Stefan de Vrij reduced the deficit midway through the second half but Inter were unable to find an equaliser, despite having no shortage of goal-scoring opportunities throughout the match on a wet afternoon.
Speaking to Inter’s official broadcaster Inter TV after the game, Bastoni was adamant he and his teammates were unfortunate in the match against the Blucerchiati.
“I think we were unlucky when it came to the key moments in the game, we had a penalty in our favour which we were not able to score and after five minutes the roles were reversed and they took the lead.
“We were, in my opinion, also able to react well but there was the feeling that we were going to struggle to score and that’s what happened.
“However, there are still many games to go, this setback will stop us.”
Bastoni proceeded to discuss the poor condition of the playing surface which only got worse as the rain continued during the match and whether it impacted things.
“Yes, but not that much because we had chances,” he added.
“It didn’t feel like we weren’t able to play because of the pitch so I wouldn’t make excuses, I would blame ourselves more because we were unable to score.”
The 21-year-old concluded by looking ahead to this weekend’s match at Roma by stating: “We know what we’re capable of and now we will go to Rome and we will try to win.”
