Former Chievo Verona goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino has sprung to the defence of Inter number one Samir Handanovic amid continued criticism.

Following his performance in yesterday’s 2-2 draw away to Roma, Handanovic has come in for some strong criticism with many believing he could have made more of an effort to stop both of the Giallorossi’s goals at the Stadio Olimpico.

The criticism has however not just been limited to the time since the Roma match with the Slovenian having felt the anger of supporters throughout the season for several perceived mistakes.

“Some friends of mine often ask me why he doesn’t dive, but I think he does it because he probably understands he will not be able to get to the ball,” Sorrentino, who now plays amateur football as a striker, told Italian broadcaster Italia 1 during their ‘Pressing’ show, earlier on today.

“I do regret that a goalkeeper of his level is being criticised so much.”

Handanovic has been with Inter for almost 10 years now and has been ever reliable but as he has gotten older, mistakes that were virtually non-existent in his career up until now have crept in.

Inter are widely reported to be looking for a long-term replacement for the 36-year-old shot-stopper, whose contract expires at the end of next season.
