The difference in quality between Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic and other top goalkeepers in Serie A is staggering, an Italian media report has highlighted today.
Handanovic has come under fire for his performances this season with fresh criticism following Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Roma, where he made no attempt to prevent either of the Giallorossi’s goals.
Tuesday’s print edition of Corriere dello Sport pointed out that the Slovenian has been culpable for numerous goals Inter have conceded this season, citing those conceded to Federico Chiesa, now at Juventus but playing for Fiorentina on match-day 1, Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Atalanta’s Aleksey Miranchuk, Cagliari’s Riccardo Sottil, Sampdoria’s Keita Balde and Lorenzo Pellegrini and Gianluca Mancini last weekend.
Inter have conceded 61 shots this season and Handanovic has saved 38 of these (62%) of them, thus, about one in every three shots Inter face ends up being a goal.
AC Milan’s Gianluigi Donnarumma has faced 60 shots and has saved 45 of them (75%), while Juventus shot-stopper Wojciech Szczesny has faced 45 shots and saved 32 of them (71%).
Inter are reported to be considering Udinese’s Juan Musso and Atalanta’s Pierluigi Gollini as long-term replacements for the 36-year-old, but the financial difficulties caused by Covid-19 mean they cannot invest in a successor at the moment.
