Marcelo Brozovic is back to his ‘Epic’ best for Inter, at least according to one Italian media report today.
Thursday’s print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport reserved high praise for the midfielder following his performance against Juventus in last weekend’s Derby d’Italia, a match for which goal-scorers Nicolo Barella and Arturo Vidal had received most of the plaudits.
Brozovic always made himself available to teammates and opponents could barely get past him, confirming he had once again returned from the brink of departing the club to become an irreplaceable figure in midfield.
Inter almost swapped Brozovic for Paris Saint-Germain’s Leandro Paredes during last summer’s transfer window, but the deal never happened in the end due to complications with commission payments.
The Croatian’s renaissance in recent months, having fallen out of favour at the back end of the 2019-20 campaign, is eerily similar to what happened in the 2017-18 season, when he almost joined Sevilla in January before becoming a key player for Luciano Spalletti in the bid for UEFA Champions League qualification.
GdS’s report highlights that for players playing in a similar role to him, Brozovic has the third most completed passes in Serie A this season with 972.
Only Atalanta’s Marten de Roon (1003) and Sassuolo’s Manuel Locatelli (1331) have completed more than the 28-year-old.
Brozovic is a unique player in Inter’s squad with no other players boasting similar characteristics to him, with Gazzetta arguing the only thing missing is an understudy for the former Dinamo Zagreb man.
Antonio Conte is trying Christian Eriksen out in the Brozovic role, but it is obvious that he will not be the same.
