Referee Fabio Maresca has come under intense scrutiny from Italian media following his display whilst taking charge of Inter’s goalless draw against Udinese yesterday.

The 39-year-old oversaw the Serie A clash at the Dacia Arena as Inter laboured to a point against their hosts, but came under fire for a range of decisions.

In their post-match player ratings, La Gazzetta dello Sport cited mistakes made by Maresca that affected the outcome of the game.

His decision to only give a foul against the already booked Tolgay Arslan for a challenge on Romelu Lukaku with less than a quarter of the match played came under particular scrutiny and it was believed that the midfielder ought to have been dismissed.

Similarly, Stefano Sensi’s late yellow card was also called into question after tangling with Kevin Lasagna, with suggestions that the Zebrette striker had committed a foul on Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella in the build up.

Maresca also dismissed Antonio Conte in stoppage time and was engaged in a heated decision with the coach in the tunnel following the full time whistle.
