Inter were deserving of their 2-1 win over AC Milan in Tuesday night’s Coppa Italia quarter-final clash, at least according to Inter central defender Stefan de Vrij.

The Nerazzurri went in to the half-time break 1-0 down but goals from Romelu Lukaku and Christian Eriksen gave Antonio Conte’s side the win.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic gave AC Milan the lead on the half-hour but was sent off midway through the second half, paving the way for Inter’s dramatic comeback.

“We are happy with the result and the performance, we deserved it,” De Vrij explained to Italian broadcaster Rai Sport post-match.

“Even when we went behind we created many chances, but we kept believing and we did it.”

The Dutch international also touched upon the battle for the Serie A title between the two Milanese clubs, who are separated by two points at the top of the table with AC Milan leading right now.

“We knew they were a strong team, they have shown it so far this season but we are too, we are confident for the rest of the season.”

The former Lazio defender proceeded to share his delight for Christian Eriksen who scored a trademark free kick late on to secure Inter’s place in the semifinals where they’ll play either Juventus or SPAL.

“How important is it that he got that goal? A lot.

“I’m happy for him, before he took the shot I told him it was his moment.

“I knew he would make the most of the opportunity, I’m happy for him.”

De Vrij was then asked what this win gives him and his teammates and whether they are now calmer than they previously were.

“We want to win games like this or the one with Juventus the other week.

“We want to do well in the league and in the cup, we are happy to go through and we hope to continue.

“Do we feel calmer? I don’t know, I’m always calm and I always try to do the best.”

In conclusion, last season’s best defender in Serie A was asked if Inter are now stronger than Juventus, who have won the last nine Serie A titles on the bounce.

“I don’t think we have to compare ourselves to others, we have to look at ourselves.

“We are confident, we are on the right path and we want to continue.”
