Italian Journalist Mario Sconcerti: “Christian Eriksen Impressed For Inter But Needs To Prove Himself”

After a strong display in Inter’s 4-0 win over Benevento, Christian Eriksen received praise from Mario Sconcerti, although the Italian journalist suggested he needed to produce against better opponents.

The Denmark international started in the Serie A clash at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza and was instrumental in a comprehensive victory, with his early freekick forcing Riccardo Improta to turn into his own net.

Eriksen, who has struggled for form since a high profile move from Tottenham Hotspur, also rattled the crossbar with a shot from distance and impressed in a deeper midfield role, just days after scoring a late winner against AC Milan in the Coppa Italia.

As reported in today’s newspaper edition of Corriere della Sera, Sconcerti praised Eriksen but suggested that he needed to do more to displace Marcelo Brozovic in midfield.

“Inter surprisingly returned to the tactics of earlier in the season, with Eriksen playing as the main creator. This was too small a match to judge though. This was a message by [Antonio] Conte to himself and to his team, that more creativity and ideas are needed.

“Eriksen did well but this was not the test of his ability. That comes against an opponent that can attack the midfield. He has the quality but perhaps not the speed of thought to spot the right pass in an instant. Otherwise, you have another player like Brozovic, and he has already secured his role.”

The victory for Inter saw them keep up the pace with leaders AC Milan at the top of Serie A, as they remain two points behind their city rivals.
