Christian Eriksen was lavished in praise after his midfield display during Inter’s 4-0 Serie A victory over Benevento yesterday.
The 28-year-old, playing in a deeper role in the middle, was in the thick of the action and set Inter on their way to victory earlier on when his dangerous freekick resulted in a Riccardo Improta own goal.
Eriksen fired against the crossbar from range in the second half and showed a good range of passing throughout the match at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, lasting the full 90 minutes as Inter were comfortable winners against the newly promoted club.
After struggling for form under coach Antonio Conte following his arrival from Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur last January, Eriksen’s performance against Benevento earned him praise from a range of Italian media.
“He provided an advantage, hit the crossbar and played a pass to Hakimi that would have reminded Conte of Pirlo and Lichtsteiner. He controlled the game, albeit benefitting from the space he was left,” La Gazzetta dello Sport claimed in today’s newspaper edition.
Meanwhile, today’s newspaper edition of Corriere dello Sport was also full of praise for Eriksen and suggested that his new role in midfield contributed to victory.
“After his appearance against Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia, this was his second appearance in the deeper role in place of Brozovic.
“Progress was evident, even if the space afforded by Benevento aided him. Corners and freekicks belonged to him, and Improta’s own goal was borne of freekick delivery,” Corriere dello Sport declared.
Eriksen has made 42 appearances appearances for Inter since his arrival from Spurs, scoring five goals.
