Christian Eriksen does not yet feel comfortable in his new play-maker position, at least according to legendary Inter defender Beppe Bergomi.
Eriksen has been tried as a ‘regista’ by Antonio Conte in recent matches, impressing during Saturday’s 4-0 win over Benevento at San Siro.
Bergomi sees promise for the 28-year-old but advised caution for those praising his displays.
“Eriksen did OK against Benevento but he needs be seen against different opponents who have a midfield that attacks Inter’s players,” Bergomi remarked while present in the studios of Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia.
“One thing must be emphasized and that is that he has climbed the pecking order.
“Before these last games, he would never have played, but now he plays in them.
“Marcelo Brozovic can now have a rest and Eriksen could be decisive for the remainder of the season.”
Asked about Eriksen’s chances of starting in Inter’s Coppa Italia semi-final first leg against Juventus, Bergomi explained: “I don’t think he will play with Juventus from the start, but he still gives Inter an extra option.”
The former Nerazzurri centre-back concluded by explaining why he thinks Eriksen is taking so many touches in the centre of Inter’s midfield.
“It could be to buy himself time on the ball, but it could also be that he does it in order to avoid being attacked by opposition players, because he does not yet feel comfortable in that role,” he suggested.
This season the former Tottenham Hotspur player, who is contracted to Inter until 2024, has made a total of 16 appearances across all competitions, in which he has scored a single goal.
