Referee Federico La Penna was praised for his display in the middle during Inter’s 2-0 Serie A victory over Fiorentina yesterday evening.
The Rome-born referee took charge of the match at the Stadio Artemio Franchi as Inter went top of the table through goals from Nicolo Barella and Ivan Perisic.
As reported in today’s newspaper edition of Corriere dello Sport, La Penna’s decision to allow Perisic’s goal to stand was commended, after Fiorentina claimed that defender Igor was fouled by Achraf Hakimi in the build up.
However, the Brazilian centre-back appeared to slip as Hakimi raced past him before teeing up Perisic for victory, with La Penna’s decision not to blow his whistle for a foul praised.
The 37-year-old official was also correct in disallowing a second goal from Perisic soon after for offside, with a VAR check vindicating his call.
Inter’s win in Florence saw them leapfrog AC Milan at the summit of Serie A ahead of the Rossoneri’s match against Crotone tomorrow.
