Inter are interested in signing AZ Alkmaar captain Teun Koopmeiners, the midfielder’s agent revealed today.
Koopmeiners is establishing himself as one of Europe’s most promising young midfielders, helping Pascal Jansen’s side to six wins in their last eight Eredivisie matches.
The 22-year-old has drawn links with Inter, Roma and Napoli in Serie A and his agent Bart Baving appeared to confirm the rumours, at least to some extent.
Baving told Minutidirecupero.it today: “A move to Italy is absolutely an option.
“Teun likes Italy very much, both in terms of the league and the country, he even knows a few words in Italian.
“The Italian clubs have never pushed themselves to take concrete steps, at least so far.
“Yes, there have been expressions of interest, but nothing more.”
Inter would face tough competition for Koopmeiners if they pursued a move for the midfielder, albeit the COVID-19 pandemic is creating uncertainty over next summer’s transfer window.
“There are several months to go until the market opens, today we cannot say what will happen,” Baving admitted.
“What I can say is that teams from all of the top leagues are after him.
“COVID-19 has affected the transfer market and we need to understand how much it will also affect the next one.”
Baving also insisted that while Koopmeiners is ready to take the next move in his career, he is entirely concentrated on the task at hand with AZ Alkmaar, whose academy he came through.
“What is certain, I repeat, is that for him the time has come for the next step,” he added.
“For now, however, it is right to clarify that the his focus is entirely on AZ and on winning a place in the Netherlands squad for the European Championships.”
Koopmeiners, who will turn 23 on Sunday, has made 32 appearances across all competitions this season, in which he has scored 14 goals and provided six assists.
