Romelu Lukaku has done a terrific job of making sure Inter haven’t missed Mauro Icardi’s goals, as highlighted by the Nerazzurri’s former striker Roberto Boninsegna.
Lukaku has scored 59 goals in 85 appearances since joining in a club-record deal from Manchester United in the summer of 2019.
He has 25 goals to his name in all competitions so far this season and has propelled Antonio Conte’s side into a six-point lead at the top of Serie A (with a game in hand).
“When Lukaku came to Inter, the problem was replacing Icardi who had scored tons of goals,” Inter legend Boninsegna explained in an interview for today’s print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport.
“But now Lukaku is Inter’s most important player: he stretches opponents and is a key reference point for his teammates.
“Sometimes he’s not selfish enough but him and Lautaro Martinez are Europe’s best strike partnership.
“They complete each other, with El Toro capable of exploiting the space created by the Belgian.”
Inter are heavy favourites to win the club’s first league title since 2o10, with Conte’s side having won each of their last eight matches.
Boninsegna seemed confident his former side would be able to complete the job in the remaining 11 games of the season.
“Juventus are in trouble, they haven’t looked this bad for 30 years,” he argued.
“AC Milan are the only rival left, and they’re dependent on Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
“But for the Scudetto it depends entirely on Inter, for sure.”
Inter’s next Serie A match will be away to Bologna next Saturday.
