Inter midfielder Arturo Vidal has stepped up his recovery from knee surgery and could be fit to return to action early next month, although his future at the club has been cast into doubt.

The Chile international underwent an operation to correct a minor injury in his left knee following Inter’s 1-0 win over Atalanta on 8 March, ruling him out of a 2-1 victory over Torino the next weekend.

As reported in today’s newspaper edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, Vidal is making strong progress in his recovery and has already begun running, with a view to being available for the rearranged Serie A match against Sassuolo on 7 April.

However, Vidal’s future beyond the end of the current season is less clear, despite having another year remaining on his contract.

The 33-year-old has suffered an inconsistent season since joining from Barcelona last summer, and with Inter looking to cut the wage bill amidst growing financial worries, the Nerazzurri are considering looking at ways to get his €6 million per season salary off the wage bill.
