Inter’s premature exit from the Champions League this season proved to be a blessing in disguise as they were able to focus on winning the Scudetto, according to Italian journalist Enzo Bucchioni.
The Nerazzurri were dumped out of European competition after finishing bottom of their Champions League group in December, but have enjoyed stunning form since Christmas to open up an eight point gap at the top of the Serie A table.
In an interview on Italian radio station TMW Radio earlier today, Bucchioni cited a lack of European commitments as a significant factor in Antonio Conte’s side being able to dominate on the domestic front.
“Inter are heading towards the Scudetto and after the elimination from the Champions League they were released from a burden and their strength came out,” Bucchioni declared.
The journalist also pointed to a change in Conte’s approach as being important to Inter’s recent success, with the former Juventus tactician adjusting his formation from the early part of the season.
“They also changed to a 3-5-2 and gave greater certainty to their game. Sunday after Sunday, the team became more focused,” he concluded.
Inter earned a ninth consecutive win last night as they defeated Bologna 1-0 at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara, as they moved closer to the title.
