Andrea Ranocchia is expected to keep his place in the Inter starting XI against Sassuolo on Wednesday, according to a leading Italian broadcaster.
Sky Sport Italia said Antonio Conte was likely to keep faith with the centre-back against Roberto De Zerbi’s side, with Alessandro Bastoni ruled out through suspension.
Ranocchia started in place of Stefan de Vrij at Bologna on Saturday, with the Dutch defender still recovering from COVID-19.
The report did not specify whether the former Hull City and Sampdoria defender would play in the centre of defence again or if he would move to the left-hand side of Inter’s back three (in Bastoni’s position).
Marcelo Brozovic is also ruled out through suspension against Sassuolo and this is likely to lead to Christian Eriksen taking his play-making position in front of the defence.
Eriksen has played as a ‘mezzala’ for Inter’s recent games but he did have a trial run in Brozovic’s deeper role back in January, during Inter’s matches against Fiorentina (in the Coppa Italia) and Benevento (in Serie A).
During their report, Sky also confirmed that Inter’s CEO Beppe Marotta had returned to Appiano Gentile today for the first since his recovery from COVID-19.
