Paris Saint-Germain have come under criticism for their deal to sign former Inter captain Mauro Icardi, with the deal being labelled a costly error by French media.

The Argentina striker fell out of favour after a series of disputes at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, and after being frozen out was sent to PSG on loan in 2019. The French champions had an option to sign Icardi for €70 million, although this was reduced to a €50m deal after a positive first season in which he netted 20 goals in 34 games.

However, the deal has now been called into question by French outlet France Football, with Icardi’s unconvincing return this season prompting suggestions that the deal has been a failure.

Icardi has been limited to just 19 games in all competitions this season after suffering injuries and contracting COVID-19, whilst an uneasy relationship with former PSG coach Thomas Tuchel also contributed to his lack of game time.

It has prompted the Parisiens to put the 28-year-old up for sale this summer, with Serie A duo Juventus and Roma amongst the interested parties, but are expected to take a significant loss due to the post-pandemic financial situation in European football.

After joining from Sampdoria in 2013, Icardi scored 124 goals in 219 appearances for Inter and was named captain before being stripped of the honour in 2019.
