Inter striker Lautaro Martinez is closing in on a new contract at the club and could finalise a deal when President Steven Zhang returns to Italy, according to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Argentina international has been in lengthy negotiations over a new deal at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza as he seeks an improved salary, and recently dismissed long-term agents Beto Yaque and Rolando Zarate.

Di Marzio appeared on Italian television channel Sky Sport Italia today to announce that a deal between Inter and Martinez was almost agreed and Zhang’s return from China would see talks become formal ahead of signatures.

“The agreements for the extension are there, but then he changed agents in the last few days. There will be more talk, but Inter’s intention is to move forward,” Di Marzio claimed.

“Zhang is expected to arrive in the next few days and it will move towards the formal discussions, after the meetings that had already taken place in January to find an agreement.”

Martinez joined Inter from Racing Club in 2018 and has gone on to score 47 goals in 123 appearances for the Nerazzurri, helping them open up an 11-point lead at the top of Serie A this season.
