Antonio Conte is the reason Inter are marching towards the Serie A title, according to Nerazzurri legend Beppe Bergomi.
Inter are 11 points clear at the top of Serie A with just eight games left, following yesterday’s hard-fought 1-0 win at home to Cagliari.
Conte’s side have won 11 straight games in the league, a run of form which has blown away their rivals AC Milan and Juventus.
Speaking to Sky Sport Italia on Sky Calcio Show last night, Bergomi argued: “Conte is Inter’s 12th man this season.
“They have a strong squad but it wasn’t guaranteed they’d achieve certain results.
“Like Conte said though, Inter haven’t done anything yet.”
Inter have received criticism in certain sections of the Italian media for their somewhat unspectacular style of play, with some even arguing they play ‘bad’ football.
Conte has always rebuffed those claims and it seems Bergomi is more or less of the same opinion.
“We’ve always said Inter have lots of qualities,” the 1982 FIFA World Cup-winning defender added.
“When they face teams who sit deep like they did against Cagliari, they don’t have many players who can beat a direct opponent.
“Inter have good defenders though who all know how to play football.
“Milan Skriniar struggled to adapt to Conte’s three-man defence initially but he has improved hugely.
“Conte has made progress with Inter ever since he stopped playing with a no. 10, which wasn’t functional for this team.
“There are other teams who catch the eye more than Inter, but you need consistency: when you win 11 games in a row, it means you’ve got that.”
Inter will look to take another step towards the title, their first in 11 years, when they visit Napoli on Sunday.
Conte’s side won the reverse fixture 1-0 back in December at San Siro.
