Antonio Conte would have several unsung heroes to thank for Inter’s likely Serie A title triumph, a report in the Italian media highlighted today.
Tuttosport’s print edition argued that the Nerazzurri’s 11-point lead at the top of the table was about more than just star players like Romelu Lukaku, Lautaro Martinez, Nicolo Barella and Achraf Hakimi.
Matteo Darmian came up with a crucial goal against Cagliari on Sunday, for instance, securing a 1-0 win for Conte’s side in a game that was beginning to slip away at San Siro.
The former Manchester United full-back has scored twice and provided two assists in Serie A this season, while also winning a key penalty in a 1-0 win against Napoli back in December.
The Turin-based paper then picked out two other ‘workhorses’ who have delivered for Inter in important moments, namely Danilo D’Ambrosio and Roberto Gagliardini.
D’Ambrosio has brought Inter four points with two decisive goals against Fiorentina (on the opening weekend of the season) and Cagliari (in December), while Gagliardini has scored three times between Benevento and Sassuolo.
Conte has always used these types of players to great effect in his title-winning teams, extracting the most from seemingly limited resources.
If Inter go on to win the Scudetto then the likes of Darmian, D’Ambrosio and Gagliardini will deserve just as much credit as Conte’s more talented stars.
