Inter President Steven Zhang is set to face crunch talks with the playing staff tomorrow as he looks to convince them to take a pay cut or wage deferral.
Despite winning the Scudetto this season, Inter are facing severe financial woes and Zhang has identified the club’s wage bill as an area that requires slashing, with the Suning man looking to bring costs down as soon as possible, according to Corriere della Sera.
Zhang is set to meet with the players on an individual basis throughout Monday as he seeks an agreement to either reduce their wages or convince them to defer salaries until a later date.
Inter’s wage bill currently stands at €220 million and the club are looking to bring it down by around 15%, or €30m, whilst the Nerazzurri are contractually obliged to pay any pre-agreed bonuses to players for winning the title.
Despite previous deferrals in the season, most notably of November and December wages, Inter insist that they have remained within the boundaries of Italian law and that changed regulations due to the COVID-19 pandemic mean that there has been greater flexibility in delaying payments.
