Referee Gianpaolo Calvarese has come in for further criticism, after his decision to disallow a Lautaro Martinez goal for Inter in their 3-2 defeat against Juventus was questioned by Italian journalist Paolo Condo.
With Inter trailing 2-1 in the second half of a controversial encounter at the Allianz Stadium yesterday, Martinez appeared to have equalised with an acrobatic volley, only for Calvarese to rule it out for a foul by Romelu Lukaku on Giorgio Chiellini in the build up.
Appearing on Italian television channel Sky Sport Italia to cover the game yesterday, Condo suggested that there was no contact between the pair and the Chiellini had fallen rather than been shoved.
“I didn’t see a foul for Lautaro’s goal. The referee whistled a Lukaku-Chiellini contact, but it seems to me that Chiellini does that thing himself,” he argued.
Condo was also critical of the two penalties in the first half, with both sides awarded spot kicks for contentious incidents.
“The first half penalties are there, but they are two different things based on the wording of VAR. The first is a clear and obvious mistake, seeing it on the monitor, while the touch on the Matthijs De Ligt’s heel on Lautaro seems more like slow motion on the pitch.”
Despite taking the lead through Lukaku’s penalty, Inter ultimately fell to defeat as Cristiano Ronaldo equalised and Juan Cuadrado scored a brace, either side of a Chiellini own goal.
