Inter will pass up the chance to re-sign Zinho Vanheusden from Standard Liege, according to a report in the Italian media today.

As per TuttoMercatoWeb, the Nerazzurri have the opportunity to bring back their former academy defender for €20 million in the summer.

However, Vanheusden has struggled to stay fit on a regular basis since his €12 million move to Belgium in 2018 and this is making Inter reluctant to invest so much money.

The 21-year-old has made only 55 league appearances in three seasons with Standard Liege, plus 11 matches in the UEFA Europa League, having suffered two serious anterior cruciate ligament injuries in that time.

Inter were supposed to re-sign Vanheusden last summer, as per a gentleman’s agreement, but the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic put paid to any possibility of that.

The Nerazzurri are still suffering financial problems and this is undoubtedly contributing to their decision, but the report insisted it was also a matter of Vanheusden’s physical condition.

Standard Liege have financial difficulties as well and they are therefore pushing for Inter to sign him, but Inter are playing for time and seem unconvinced about such an operation.

Vanheusden finally returned to action last week after his second ACL injury, making two substitute appearances in Standard Liege’s end-of-season play-off matches.

He told reporters last night that he wanted to remain with the Belgian side, while also insisting he hadn’t spoken to any other clubs.
