Romelu Lukaku’s Belgian teammate Thomas Vermaelen has praised  the Inter striker during a press conference held in Tubize, four days before the Red Devils open their tournament with a match against Russia.

The veteran defender, formerly of Arsenal and Barcelona and now at Vissel Kobe, suggested that Lukaku’s club form with Inter was highly impressive, and represents a step-up for the 28-year-old center-forward.

“He had a fantastic season with Inter, let’s hope that he’ll show the same at the European Championship too,” Vermaelen told the interviewer.

Belgium are among the favourites for the tournament in the eyes of many observers, with the likes of Premier League stars such as Kevin de Bruyne and Youri Tielemans cause for optimism for Belgium supporters.

However, there is perhaps no individual in the Belgium squad who has shown form as exciting as Lukaku during the past club season, and he may proved talismanic to the national side which have never won a major tournament yet despite recently reaching the World Cup semi-finals.
